<p>They are not rules as in laws you must observe &#8220;or else&#8221;, but rather are suggestions which have been found empirically to give superior results (i.e. higher Return on Investment, or ROI).</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the individuals responsible for generating most of the direct mail marketing campaigns small businesses run are not in fact qualified for the job. Because it tends to be left in the hands of graphic designers, and unless they&#8217;ve been expressly trained in direct marketing principles, they &#8216;ll produce something that looks marvelous &#8230; but in terms of ROI is a disaster.</p>
<p>More serious still, it&#8217;s pointless arguing with them: in spite of reams of evidence to the contrary, I still hear graphic designers advising my customers what I&#8217;ve created for them has too much text and no one will read it (which must be why the 22-page sales letter I recently sent out for a client went to 30,000 + people and produced an ROI of 150,000 GBP or more, I imagine). So here some simple rules for direct mail. I promise, abide by these and you&#8217;re going to get better responses:</p>
<p>Rule # 1: Don&#8217;t bawl &#8220;ADVERTISING&#8221;</p>
<p>Most direct mail advertising LOOKS like advertising. You get it in a stock envelope with a label or printed address on it, and as often as not it has the company name and logo on it, to. This is a really atrocious idea..</p>
<p>How come? Because it&#8217;s obvious even to my dog this is a marketing piece &#8212; and it follows you&#8217;re going to seek and sell me something, which right away puts me on the defensive.</p>
<p>Rather, I recommend you use a simple, white envelope, the kind you&#8217;d use for a personal letter. Then use an actual stamp (as in, a stamp from the Post Office), and hand-write the address, or at least use a reasonable looking handwriting font printed right onto the envelope&#8211; NO LABELS.</p>
<p>If you are compelled have a return address on it, simply use the address in the top left corner &#8212; no company name, no logo.</p>
<p>Just doing this one means your direct mail is going to be delivered to and opened by many, many more people. No one can resist a hand-addressed personal letter.</p>
<p>Rule # 2: Write from &#8216;one person to another &#8216;</p>
<p>This is in direct contrast to the direct mail advertising pieces you get every day, I &#8216;d put money on it. Most of them have no obvious reason even for existing &#8212; I assume the fool producing them waxed lyrical about &#8220;brand&#8221; or something. But developing your &#8220;brand&#8221; doesn&#8217;t by itself make you money. Brand follows and because of service.</p>
<p>You should write your direct mail marketing pieces in exactly the same tone as you &#8216;d write a letter to an appreciated aunt or uncle. Forget about being &#8220;professional&#8221; or keeping to the practices they taught you at school. Simply write as you speak, and you won&#8217;t go far wrong.</p>
<p>Aim your entire piece at emphasising one problem and one problem only, by giving a big, bold promise in your headline. Then, in the body of the piece, tell them you CAN resolve it, and then explain to them EXACTLY HOW they can obtain this miracle solution you have. In other words, you need a focused and impossible-to-miss call to action, like &#8220;Telephone me on 00000-000000 NOW and book your free appointment &#8212; places are limited to the first seven callers, so if you&#8217;re the eighth caller, you&#8217;ll miss out&#8221;. Easy as pie.</p>

<p>There are many time-tested advantages of flyer marketing. Here are five good reasons why this advertising method is still so popular with lawn mowing businesses.</p>
<p>1) Cost Effectiveness</p>
<p>The main advantage that attracts business people to flyers is their low cost. They are easy to design and cheap to print. When you do larger volumes the price per unit drops even lower. Distribution costs can also be quite low, or even free, depending on which method you use.</p>
<p>2) Measurable Results</p>
<p>The best kinds of advertising are the ones that allow you to measure the results that they bring in. There are many ways to track the success of a flyer, such as the use of promotional codes or specific phone numbers for example. The data that you get back from a campaign will allow you to work out if it was cost effective.</p>
<p>3) Variety of Distribution Methods</p>

<p>Flyers are notorious for having extremely low response rates. Most consumers don&#8217;t pay much attention to the message on the flyer and quickly deposit it into the trash. <p>Many entrepreneurs think that flyers are great as you can distribute them for free. Most forget to place a value on their own time. Let&#8217;s say that you end up spending hours going door to door or looking for places to hang up your flyers. Shouldn&#8217;t you ask yourself if there is a better way to spend your time?</p>
<p>My opinion is that as this advertising method is reasonably cheap you may as well run a few tests. Always use carefully selected distribution methods to stay on the right side of local authorities. If it works out well for you then you might consider making flyer drops a regular part of your marketing. If lawn care flyers don&#8217;t work out well in your area then you can always cut your losses and move on.</p>

<p>In a gourmet market, Professor Sheena Iyengar of Columbia University and her research assistants set up a booth offering samples of Wilkin &#038; Sons jams.</p>
<p>Every few hours, the researchers switched from offering shoppers a selection of 24 jams to offering a group of only six jams.</p>
<p>Regardless of the number of jams offered, participating customers received a $1 discount coupon and tasted, on average, two jams.</p>
<p>The results may surprise you.</p>
<p>Of those customers who were offered the full selection of 24 jams, 60 percent stopped to taste the jams. Yet when researchers switched the display to offer only six jams, only 40 percent of prospects stopped for a sample.</p>
<p>But of those shoppers who sampled the smaller display, 30 percent bought the jam while only 3 percent of those offered a wider choice made a purchase.</p>
<p>The display with more choices drew the largest crowd but customers presented with fewer choices purchased more.</p>
<p>Researchers repeated the test using a wide variety of products-everything from speed dating to chocolate. And each time, regardless of the product tested, offering shoppers fewer options resulted in more sales.</p>
<p>Professor Iyengar concluded, &#8220;In reality, people might find more and more choices to actually be debilitating.&#8221; And while it may be too simple to conclude that offering a large number of choices is bad, we shouldn&#8217;t assume that providing more choice is always better.</p>
<p>What does this have to do with our direct mail?</p>
<p>Review the mailings you receive-especially the letter&#8217;s offer and the response device. You&#8217;ll see nonprofits offering a choice of five, six or seven asking amounts. And the combination of offers found in a cable company&#8217;s promotion for its bundle of Internet, television and telephone services can be overwhelming.</p>
<p>Forcing the reader to select from too many choices can freeze their decision-making and cost us the sale.</p>
<p>For nonprofits, three suggested contribution amounts plus an &#8220;Other&#8221; option is plenty.</p>
<p>Littering surveys with too many questions is no different. Surveys are a great way to involve the reader with our mailing but we need to keep it simple.</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve probably have received a telephone call asking for your participation in an &#8220;important survey.&#8221; You&#8217;re interested in the subject so you say, &#8220;Yes&#8221; and 20 minutes later, you&#8217;re wondering why you even answered the phone.</p>
<p>We can&#8217;t afford to make the same mistake when designing our direct mail.</p>
<p>When the objective of your direct mail package is to make a sale or generate a contribution, the survey&#8217;s purpose is to help generate response, not to gather information.</p>
<p>Limit yourself to five or seven questions and allow the reader to move quickly to the order form. If you need to collect information, reserve the survey for a special mailing that isn&#8217;t expected to make a sale.</p>
<p>If you feel you have to give your reader plenty of options to express the full value of your offer, re-think your list segmentation. Better segmentation of your mailing lists will allow you to offer fewer, better targeted choices.</p>
<p>Be careful not to overwhelm the reader with too many options. Whether you&#8217;re asking for a contribution, a lead or a sale, make it easy for the reader to make a choice and you&#8217;ll increase response.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot we can learn from Professor Iyengar&#8217;s research on how to sell jam. Make it easy, quick and simple for the prospect to respond and you&#8217;ll enjoy the results better than jam on your breakfast toast.</p>
